Property Description
A clawfoot bath, plumbed with hot water, sitting on a merbau deck under whatever tree you decide to put it under. The Getaway was built as an off-grid retreat, and it travels with everything that makes it one.
It was built by its owner, a builder by trade, who put it together for himself between June 2024 and February 2025. Licensed trades certified the electrical, plumbing and waterproofing, and those certificates come with the home.
The shell is a recycled 20ft shipping container, finished in matte black steel with black aluminium awning windows rated to BAL 19. Inside, the walls and ceiling are lined in wide timber boards, which turns a steel shell into something closer to a cabin. The bathroom is finished in a pale blush render with matte black tapware, a basin and a fixed glass shower screen, and the shower runs from a black ceiling-mounted rainfall head.
It is a single studio volume. The bed sits at one end with a window on each side, so you wake facing the outlook, and a fold-down table does the eating end of the day. A projector screen with USB-C and blockout blinds throughout turn the same room into a cinema after dark.
It runs entirely off-grid. Nine solar panels and three batteries carry the power, a gas system handles hot water off two 45kg bottles, a 5,000L tank and pump handle the water, and a certified composting toilet means no black water connection and real freedom about where you site it.
The kitchenette does sink, bar fridge and coffee. Cooking happens outside, and the deck has room for a barbecue, which is what makes this a weekender, a guest space or a short-stay retreat rather than a full-time house.
It sells with its furniture, blinds, appliances and the bath included. Inspections by appointment, remote walkthroughs available, and we can connect you with transport operators who move homes like this regularly.
Detailed Information
A plumbed clawfoot bath on a merbau deck, with hot water and a chrome floor mixer. Off-grid without qualification: nine solar panels, three batteries, a 5,000L tank and pump, gas hot water and a certified composting toilet. Built by its owner, a builder by trade, as his own retreat. Sold with everything in it. Bed base, blockout blinds, bar fridge, coffee machine, projector screen and outdoor furniture all stay with the home. The bed sits with a window on each side, so the outlook is the first thing you see in the morning. Bushfire-rated BAL 19 glazing throughout, which counts on a rural site. An 8m merbau deck that carries the bath, the seating and the entry, included in the sale.
The structure is a recycled 20ft shipping container, sitting on steel stumps and bearers. A container is a sealed steel shell engineered to be lifted and moved, which is why these homes travel well and hold their shape over years of being resited. The work here went into making it live like a house.
The walls are built up in layers: the container skin, insulation, 15mm plywood, then a timber lining. Walls and ceiling are lined in wide timber boards and the bathroom is finished in a pale blush render, so the interior reads as a cabin rather than a converted box.
Outside, the container is clad in painted steel in matte black, with black aluminium awning windows rated to BAL 19. On a rural site, bushfire-rated glazing is not a detail to gloss over, and the windows open for cross-ventilation.
The home carries compliance certificates for electrical, plumbing and waterproofing work, and a smoke alarm is installed. Internal ceiling height is 2275mm. The full drawing set and all certificates are available to review before purchase, which is the kind of documentation that makes a remote purchase reasonable rather than a leap.
Sold with its furniture, appliances and off-grid systems in place, so it can be sited and used from day one.

What you bring The kitchenette does sink, fridge and coffee. There is no cooktop or oven, so plan for a benchtop cooker or a barbecue on the deck. There is no laundry. This is a retreat, and it is set up like one.
The deck is included in the sale and is dismantled for transport. The seller built it and can assist with taking it apart and rebuilding it at your end for an agreed fee.
The main one is a trailer at $10,000, which the seller will buy and fit and which turns it into a tiny home on wheels. The merbau deck comes with the home and needs dismantling for transport, and the seller built it so he can take it apart and rebuild it at your end for a fee. Happy to price either on a call.
The home sits at ground level and is not towable as it stands. It is moved by crane or tilt-tray onto a truck, which is standard for a container structure and means professional transport rather than a tow vehicle. Transport is the buyer's responsibility, and we can connect you with operators who move homes like this regularly.
It is currently sited in the Victorian High Country near Benalla, around three hours from Melbourne. The seller has advised that the access road is not in good condition, so the route should be checked and confirmed as suitable by you and your transport contractor before collection is booked.
The seller will assist with loading onto the truck. Once the home has been collected, responsibility passes to you and your transport contractor.
The merbau deck is dismantled for transport, with the seller available to assist for an agreed fee.
At your end you will need a level site. The solar system, batteries, water tank and composting toilet all travel with the home, so it can run as it runs now without a mains connection.
The home is sold without a builder's warranty, so arrange your own building assessment before purchase. Inspections are by appointment, and remote walkthroughs are available for interstate buyers.
It runs a ceiling fan, blockout blinds throughout and fly screens, with awning windows on both sides that open for cross-ventilation. There is no air conditioning or heating, which is worth knowing if you are planning year-round use rather than seasonal. Happy to talk through how it handles the weather on a call.
It is off-grid rather than off-grid capable. Nine solar panels on a ground-mounted frame and three ItechWorld batteries carry the power, a gas system handles hot water off two 45kg bottles, and there is a 5,000L tank and pump plus a certified composting toilet, so no mains and no black water connection.
